Abstract

  • In September 2019, the number of poor people in East Java reached 4,056.00 thousand people (10.20 percent), decreasing by 56.3 thousand people compared to the conditions in March 2019 which amounted to 4112.25 thousand people (10.37 percent).
  • The percentage of poor people in urban areas in March 2019 was 6.84 percent down to 6.77 percent in September 2019. While the percentage of poor people in rural areas in March 2019 was 14.43 percent down to 14.16 percent in September 2019.
  • During the period March 2019 - September 2019, the number of poor people in urban areas decreased by 11.1 thousand people (from 1,449.27 thousand people in March 2019 to 1,438.15 thousand people in September 2019). While in rural areas it fell by 45.1 thousand people (from 2,662.98 thousand people in March 2019 to 2,617.85 thousand people in September 2019).
  • The role of food commodities towards the poverty line is far greater than the role of non-food commodities. The contribution of the Food Poverty Line to the Poverty Line in September 2019 was recorded at 74.91 percent, a slight decrease compared to the March 2019 condition of 75.02 percent.
  • Based on food commodities, a number of commodities that gave a substantial contribution to the food poverty line both in rural and urban areas, namely rice, filter clove cigarettes, eggs, broiler, tempeh, tofu, granulated sugar, instant noodles, and Cayenne pepper.
